Faith & Film
This page is dedicated to an exploration of how different aspects of faith or themes of the Gospel play out in films. Many will be popular, but I will, of course, write about a movie if I feel like it, no matter its Box Office Success. Please note that all review titles will contain the film title as well, and there will be spoilers within. So, please read this as a general SPOILER ALERT and avoid a review if you wish to avoid spoilers.
The image accompanying this notice will always be a recent film I have seen and plan to review. It may also be a sentimental favorite.
To read a review, simply click the image for the film. If there's no link, it's because I haven't done that one yet.
Welcome, and enjoy.
2023 Oscar Best Pictures Nominees
The nominees are in, and the following films have been nominated for Best Picture, to be announced at the end of the show on March 12, 2023.
While I have not kept up with this practice during the pandemic, I did watch them all each year, and will work to fill the backlog over the coming year. Below are this year's nominees for Best Picture, in the order they appear on the ballot.
2020 Oscar Best Pictures Nominees
The nominees are in, and the following films have been nominated for Best Picture, to be announced at the end of the show on February 9, 2020.
I will also note this year that the Best Director category is again filled with all men, leaving out the achievements, in particular, of Greta Gerwig, director of Little Women, and Lorene Scafaria, director of Hustlers. It is my sincere hope that the Academy will one day acknowledge the achievements of outstanding women and people of color as highly as they value the mediocrity of white men such as Quentin Tarantino, whose Once upon a Time in Hollywood is just the latest installment in the long string of rewarding people for making something quite blah about Hollywood.
2018 Oscar Best Picture Nominees
Each year, my wife and I try our best to see each of the Best Picture nominees before the Academy Awards. This practice is largely due to our shared love of film and its represented social commentary. However, it also serves to inform our thoughts on problems and victories in the film industry, when viewed through the lenses of faith and social justice, including what films win, but also what films are nominated or left out.
This year, we saw all the films. I am still working to go back and do all the reviews, but am happy that The Shape of Water won the big prize this year!!
