Marriage Story

Noah Baumbach's slightly fictionalized version of his own divorce, Marriage Story, is a two and a quarter hour slog through his own neuroses, past trauma, and narcism. A full summary could simply ready, Charlie (Driver) and Nicole (Johansson) get divorced and fight over their kid.

Anyone who has been divorced, especially if there were kids involved, will have a hard time making it through the film. The acting is definitely superior, as the whole film is held up by the acting primarily of the two leads.

Discussion points are definitely heavy for family dynamics, both within romantic relationships and the family and friends who are in orbit around those relationships. The idea of fighting just to get what is wanted, whatever the cost, is central for most of the story. In the end, the characters figure out how to work things and move forward as a family, even when that looks much different than before. It closes with hope and care, which reminds the viewer of the more important things in life. This film will cost emotional energy, but if one is a fan of dramas, especially family dramas, go for it.
