The Favourite

I have to preface the following with the disclaimer that I had no interest in seeing this movie whatsoever, and only reluctantly went to see it because of my desire to see all films nominated for Best Picture. Before getting to a discussion of what themes can be helpful in a faith conversation, I must also say that I was entirely unimpressed by the film itself. While the costume design and makeup had my wife and me looking up things after and dreaming of fun costumes, and the art and visual direction were stunning, there didn't seem to be a single moment in the entire film that could not have been predicted with 99% accuracy following the previews. It was definitely a case of including everything interesting about the story to cover up for the fact that it was a bland story simply made to grab Oscar nominations; a masturbatory industry piece along the same lines as "La La Land," with nothing but visuals and good actors to prop it up. Unfortunately, there is nothing left when this is stripped away.

As far as any conversation of faith goes, this film does call viewers to think about how much we are opened to manipulation and falsehood if we have a poor view of ourselves or if we deny who God created us to be, as human sexuality is a major theme of the movie. Duty, revenge, justice, love, and ambition also come into play here. Either way, I can't talk much more as I can't even bring myself to care about this movie.
